Truck Driving Lessons in Ireland — Category C and CE

Thinking about a career behind the wheel? Epic Driving School provides professional truck driving lessons for category C (rigid) and CE (artic) licences, taking you from your first time in the cab to a confident test-day performance. Ireland’s shortage of qualified HGV drivers means trained drivers are in real demand — and proper training is the fastest route in.

Lessons are built around what the RSA test actually requires: full control of the vehicle, mirror work and observation, reversing exercises, coupling procedures for artics, and the technical checks and questions examiners ask. Nervous starters are welcome — every professional driver started with lesson one.

Before the practical training, you’ll need your truck theory sorted — try our free category C theory practice test. Then check our lesson prices or get in touch to plan your training.

Category C vs CE — What’s the Difference?

Category C (rigid) Category CE (artic / trailer)
Vehicle Rigid truck over 3,500 kg Truck with trailer or articulated combination
Prerequisite Full B licence, C theory test, NDLS medical Full category C licence
Extra skills Cab control, reversing, walk-around checks Coupling/uncoupling, trailer reversing
Typical work Local delivery, construction, waste, utilities Long-haul, containers, supply chain

Most drivers qualify in C first and add CE afterwards — the skills carry straight over, with the trailer work added on top.

Frequently Asked Questions

What do I need before starting truck lessons?

You’ll need a full category B licence, a pass in the truck (category C) theory test and an NDLS medical report to get your learner permit. Once the permit is issued, practical lessons can begin — our free theory practice test is a good place to start.

What’s the difference between category C and CE?

C covers rigid trucks; CE adds an articulated combination or trailer. Most drivers qualify in C first, then upgrade to CE — the skills carry over, with coupling and trailer reversing added on top.

Do I need Driver CPC?

To drive professionally, yes — Driver CPC sits alongside the licence with its own case-study and practical elements. Our training covers the walk-around check and vehicle questions that CPC and the RSA test both demand.

Is the truck provided for lessons?

Yes — you learn on a school truck, so you don’t need your own vehicle to train. Test-day vehicle arrangements can be discussed when booking.

How long does it take to get a truck licence?

Realistically a few months: theory, medical and permit first, then lessons and the practical test — test-centre waiting times vary by county, and our news section tracks them.
