BE Pre-Test & Mock Trailer Test

Driving Lessons

Your Category BE driving test is a full driving assessment – not just reversing a trailer. Most students who fail do so because they underestimate the test or skip proper preparation. Our BE Pre-Test lessons and Mock Trailer Test at Epic Driving School are specifically designed to eliminate that risk. You’ll know exactly what to expect, where your weak points are, and how to fix them – before the real test day.

What Is the BE Driving Test?

Before booking pre-test preparation, it helps to understand what you’re actually being tested on.

What the RSA Category BE Test Covers

The BE driving test is a full practical driving test – not just a trailer manoeuvring exercise. On test day, you will be assessed on:

Vehicle Safety Checks (pre-drive questions)

  • Coupling and uncoupling the trailer correctly
  • Checking trailer lights, tyres, and hitch security
  • Breakaway cable and safety chain inspection
  • Load security and weight distribution awareness

Practical Driving (on public roads)

  • Driving with a trailer on national roads, regional roads, and built-up areas
  • Correct use of mirrors when towing
  • Safe braking distances with a trailer attached
  • Awareness of trailer swing and overhang
  • Adherence to the 80km/h speed limit when towing

Trailer Manoeuvres

  • Reversing the trailer in a straight line
  • Reversing the trailer around a corner
  • Parking the combination safely

Common reasons students fail the BE test:

  • Poor reversing technique (most common)
  • Incorrect coupling/uncoupling during pre-drive checks
  • Not checking mirrors frequently enough while driving
  • Exceeding speed limit when towing (80km/h max)
  • Rushing the manoeuvres under pressure

Our BE Pre-Test Lessons

A Pre-Test lesson is a focused, targeted session designed to close the gap between where you are now and where you need to be to pass.

What Happens in a BE Pre-Test Lesson

Your instructor will conduct a full assessment drive with the trailer, evaluating your performance across every area of the test. Then they’ll work through exactly what needs to improve:

  • Reversing precision – the most common failure point, practised until consistent
  • Coupling and uncoupling drill – fast, correct, and in the right order every time
  • Mirror discipline – building the habit of constant mirror checks while towing
  • Manoeuvre timing – learning when to move, when to stop, and when to correct
  • Test route familiarisation – driving the actual routes used at your local RSA test centre
  • Pre-drive question preparation – the exact questions your examiner will ask

Who Should Book a Pre-Test Lesson?

✅ You’ve had your standard lessons and feel almost ready

✅ You’ve failed the BE test before and want targeted feedback

✅ You feel confident driving but nervous about the test format

✅ You want a professional assessment before booking your RSA test date

Mock Trailer Test

The Mock Trailer Test is the most powerful preparation tool we offer and one of the few available in Ireland for Category BE.

What Is a Mock Trailer Test?

A Mock Trailer Test is a complete, realistic simulation of the RSA Category BE driving test, conducted by your Epic Driving School instructor. It follows the exact same format, sequence, and scoring criteria as the real test – so you experience everything before it actually counts.

How the Mock Test Works

Duration: Approximately 45–60 minutes (same as the real test)

Format:

  1. Pre-drive vehicle safety questions (coupling, uncoupling, lights, tyres)
  2. Full drive on public roads with the trailer – covering national, regional, and urban routes
  3. Trailer manoeuvres – reversing, parking the combination
  4. Debrief – full written feedback sheet covering every area assessed

After the test, you receive:

  • A pass/fail result based on RSA grading criteria
  • A detailed breakdown of faults – grade 1 (minor), grade 2 (serious), grade 3 (dangerous)
  • Specific advice on what to fix before your real test
  • An honest recommendation on whether you are ready to book your RSA test

Why the Mock Test Makes a Real Difference

The biggest challenge on test day isn’t skill it’s pressure. Knowing an examiner is watching changes how people drive. The mock test replicates that pressure in a safe environment, so by the time your real test comes, it feels familiar rather than overwhelming.

Students who complete a mock test are significantly more likely to pass first time.

FAQ

How many pre-test lessons do I need before my BE test?

Most students benefit from 1–2 pre-test lessons before their RSA test. If you’ve failed the test before, 2–3 lessons focused on your specific failure points are recommended.

Yes – it follows the exact same format, sequence, and grading criteria as the RSA Category BE driving test. The only difference is that your Epic instructor acts as the examiner, not an RSA official.

Yes. If you’ve had lessons elsewhere and just want an independent assessment before your test date, you can book a standalone Mock Trailer Test with us.

We use our own RSA-compliant jeep and box trailer. Alternatively, if you prefer to use your own vehicle, we can attach our approved trailer to it – just let us know when booking.

Ideally 1–2 weeks before your real test. This gives you enough time to fix any issues identified during the mock, but close enough that your skills are sharp on test day.

A mock test fail is exactly what it’s designed to catch – better to fail here than on test day. Your instructor will give you a full debrief explaining every fault, and you can book additional pre-test lessons to address them before rescheduling your RSA test.
